Odoo reordering rules: stop stock-outs without overbuying

A reordering rule says: when forecast stock falls below X, order up to Y.

Set one up

Inventory → Operations → Replenishment → New. Fill:

  • Product and Location
  • Min: reorder when forecast goes below this
  • Max: order up to this quantity
  • Multiple: order in packs (for example 12)

Lead time matters

Set Vendor lead time on the product’s vendor line. Odoo orders early enough to arrive before you run out. A rule with a lead time of 0 days always orders late.

Forecast, not on-hand

The rule reads forecast = on hand + incoming − outgoing. If a big sales order is confirmed, the rule reacts before the stock physically leaves.

Typical mistakes

  • Min equal to Max, which orders tiny amounts every day
  • No vendor set, so no PO is created
  • Routes not enabled: check the product has the Buy route

Quick test

Confirm a sale that pushes the forecast under Min. Run the scheduler (Replenishment → Run Scheduler). A draft purchase order should appear.
